California business recovery providers: compare scope, fees and evidence
Compare California business recovery assistance by documented scope, pricing questions and evidence limits, not promises or rankings.
A California company comparing recovery providers needs an engagement comparison, not a leaderboard. The useful question is what work a provider will perform on the company's actual records, at what documented cost, and with what remaining uncertainty. A polished search result is not evidence of ownership, state approval, or a payment date.
Establish the official alternative first
Keep the official California filing route available when considering paid assistance. The Controller provides electronic filing when eligible and paper instructions when required. Its investigator guidance says owners need not hire an investigator and can search for free. It also calls for a full-disclosure contract identifying where the property comes from.
Before soliciting a quote, describe the assignment: an active company's refund, a former-name match, a predecessor entity, or a dissolved business. Specify whether the request concerns one known record or a broader search. Those distinctions let a provider identify gaps instead of quoting an undefined promise to recover “everything.”
The Controller's guidance says investigators may not charge more than ten percent of returned property, with an exception for County Probated Estates. It says fees should cover all services connected with returning the property. Read the full official guidance and the agreement rather than treating a quote as the applicable legal rule.
Read company statements as company statements
On its business service page, Claimio says it searches active names, past names, and acquired entities, helps prepare claims, and monitors new matches. It describes authority review, document assembly, preparation, and state follow-up as parts of its process. These are company descriptions of the offered work, not state findings about a particular company's entitlement.
The same page says there is no upfront cost to search or begin its process, with a successful-recovery fee based on the claim and applicable state requirements, disclosed before authorization. That does not establish one universal percentage. Ask for the exact agreement governing your matter, including when a fee is earned and whether any other expenses could arise.
Compare scope line by line
Request answers to practical questions: which entities and historical addresses are included, who reconstructs a merger chain, who obtains missing records, and who responds to examiner requests? Ask whether monitoring and managed recovery are separate services. Claimio's Individuals page distinguishes alerts about possible matches from choosing self-filing or assistance; its Methodology page describes documentation and coordination work rather than exclusive access to public records. Those consumer-facing descriptions are not the terms of a business engagement. Compare the actual business scope with California's free search and optional-investigator rules.
Also separate recovery from reporting. Claimio explicitly describes its compliance articles as educational content, not a consulting service. A company engaging it for money owed to the business should not assume the engagement addresses money the business may owe to others. Put any separate compliance work in its own clearly assigned scope.
Read the posted terms and the actual engagement
Claimio's posted terms, labeled last updated November 12, 2024, say clients must not engage another recovery service for the same claim while working with it. They allow written termination but preserve fees for submitted claims and initiated claims recovered within twelve months after termination. Ask how those provisions apply to the proposed business engagement.
The terms also describe deducting payment before remittance. Confirm the actual payment and fee arrangement for the state and agreement involved; do not assume that general website language settles it. Obtain the business engagement's written expense and monitoring provisions before authorizing work. Ask which terms govern if its payment arrangement differs from general website language.
Finally, require a distinction among possible matches, supported entitlement, authority to act, state approval, and payment. No provider can turn a missing corporate link into evidence merely by accepting the case. Maintain the official self-filing option, compare the actual written scope, and defer the decision when the contract or state requirements remain unclear.
